Great ideas. I’d be interested in seeing if there is a way to continue the development of this type of concept without being a destructive ecological presence. Perhaps there is a way to harness just a portion of the water speed, keeping the location of the actual turbine elements stationed in specific locations where animal and plant life would be unaffected (which wouldn’t be too hard to find in high speed current locations).
As an architect and environmental designer, we’re seeing a very large push for “sustainable” resources that can be incorporated into the local development (as opposed to a specific site somewhere in the mountains that requires the energy be transported to the public somewhere else). It seems to me that this concept is already very close to being a capable candidate for a “sustainable” solution.
Not sure about everyone’s interest level on this subject, but I personally feel it’s worth investigating!

Why Should Renewable Energy Be A Main Stream Solution?
Reason 1:
No doubt that renewable energies are plenty and spread everywhere on the planet’s surface.
Reason 2:
Harnessing energy on earth’s surface should be less expensive then drilling/digging thousand meters underground. Fossil fuels are just in a denser form.
Reason 3:
Fossil fuels are concentrated on specific geographical locations such as oilfield, coalmine, etc. They need to be unearthed then transferred, multi-tier processed before it reaches to the consumer. While renewable energy in various forms (solar, wind hydro, ocean) are everywhere. They are at POS (point of service); easing the load on transferring infrastructure.
Reason 4:
Building a renewable harnessing device(s) that are commercially competitive to other type of energy technologies are not new. It’s a dream of not one but hundreds, thousands of minds at any given time at least in the last 100 years.

So far, harnessing renewable energy is not as profitable as other form of fossil energy. As of today; even after many decades (centuries) of development, and improvement the current technologies are far from to be considered as a “good”, profitable investment. The achieving is too far behind that set goals; even if we can one can increase twice their efficiency they still could not. Therefore any “me to” technology with minor changes here and there will not work. It can improve but can not leap frog to make the new energy area.
